Health and Aging
The Baby Boomers today are a group whose parents are now referred to as the “older generation”. They are often well into their 70 and 80's and the health and aging aspect is of huge concern to themselves, their carers, their families and also the government. With the advances in medicine it is not uncommon to have people reach well into the eighties and beyond and whilst a lucky few are still in their own homes many live in retirement villages and nursing homes. These lovely souls have given their life’s work to provide service of one kind or another to their families and Countries, and they are a generation that is more than a little frightened by today’s modern pace and technology. The world is busy being busy and we sometimes forget that they cannot keep up. The same applies to their health care, quite often the medication assists them to live longer but at what price? How often does a medication for one symptom upset another part of the body and then that also requires more medication? Yes it is certainly helping them live longer however how is their function of life? What do you feel are two of the most important and missing elements of today’s health and aging care of our elderly?
I personally believe it to be “touch” and “time”. To be given appropriate touch and a satisfactory time to listen about their cares and concerns. A doctor’s day is overburdened with many patients and they do not have the time or man power to devote more than the standard 10-15 minutes consultations to someone who is “just old”. Being old is not a medical diagnosis, however just give a moment’s thought to some of the limitations it at times entails:- forgetfulness, anxiety, sleep deprivation, inability to chew, swallow and digest food easily, poor vision, poor mobility, incontinence, dexterity, dignity and loneliness. That does not take into account any medical conditions they may have, quite a list don’t you think? Our modern life does not give much tolerance to their “old issues” we expect them to keep up and to be happy with their health and aging challenges in life.........would you be?
Kinesiology along with many other natural therapies can assist them to feel better about who they are, to give them back some of their dexterity or function and above all to provide that appropriate caring touch that is often absent in their lives. As with many illnesses and medical conditions is the emotional impact that has a great bearing on how one copes with life’s challenges. Kinesiology is a modality that is being more and more frequently utilized to give health and aging care to people and to enable them to live and function better.
A case study of mine demonstrates the benefit of relieving a stress trigger for an elderly client. My client was in her early 80’s and her son was called up for active duty in Afghanistan. She had already experienced the trauma and reality of war as a young adult growing up in Brisbane so knew the possibility of death or trauma of a serviceman in a war zone. She was very distressed and was having difficulty sleeping and came to see if I could help. During the balance it showed that the colour red was a major stress trigger and when I asked what she thought this meant she replied “I keep having nightmares of my son coming home in a body bag and visions of lots of blood!” We used a technique called Emotional Stress Release where the colour red was given a different connotation, we discussed the idea of her son’s welcome home party and how she was going to make his favourite red jelly for the occasion. This was sufficient to defuse her stress/anxiety trigger and allowed her some peace. It didn't change the fact that her son was in a war zone, or that he was in possible danger, however it did give her brain/mind another option for her thoughts.
This is just one example of how a different approach has been used for a health and aging challenge that proved very beneficial.
